چکیده

The classical Petrov-Galerkin approach to Black Box multigrid for nonsymmetric problems due to Dendy is combined with the recent factor-three-coarsening Black Box algorithm due to Dendy and Moulton, along with a powerful symmetric line Gauss-Seidel smoother, resulting in an e cient and robust multigrid solver. Focusing on the convectiondi usion operator, the algorithm is tested and shown to achieve fast and reliable convergence with both rst-order and second-order accurate upstream discretizations of the convection operator for a wide range of di usion coe cients. The solver also exhibits robust behavior with respect to discontinuous jumps in the di usion coe cient, and performs well for recirculating ows over a wide range of di usion coe cients. The e ciency of the solver is supported by results of an analysis for the case of constant coe cients.

Previously we examined the black box multigrid approach to systems of equations. The approach was a direct extension of the methodology used for scalar equations; that is, interpolation and residual weighting were operator induced, and coarsening employed a Galerkin strategy. The application was to standard coarsening of the unknowns. In this paper we consider a semicoarsening approach and find...

An efficient semi-coarsening multigrid method for variable diffusion problems in cylindrical coordinates

In this paper, we present an efficient multigrid (MG) algorithm for solving the three-dimensional variable coefficient diffusion equation in cylindrical coordinates. The multigrid V-cycle combines a semi-coarsening in azimuthal direction with the red-black Gauss–Seidel plane (radial-axial plane) relaxation. On each plane relaxation, we further semi-coarsen the axial direction with red-black lin...

The Black Box Multigrid Numerical Homogenization Algorithm

In mathematical models of ow through porous media, the coe cients typically exhibit severe variations in two or more signi cantly di erent length scales. Consequently, the numerical treatment of these problems relies on a homogenization or upscaling procedure to de ne an approximate coarse-scale problem that adequately captures the in uence of the ne-scale structure. Inherent in such a procedur...
